Looking back, when we were kids, the thing we looked forward to most at birthday parties was going to a fast food restaurant. Whether it was going to the cinema, a scavenger hunt or go-karting, it was all nice and fun, but the highlight and the wait for a delicious burger and fries was our biggest worry.
Today we not only have more experience, but also control and know that the burger we had back then has nothing to do with a really good hamburger. On the contrary, we now know what a burger can do, which components are important and how easy it can be to make a delicious burger yourself. As we have gotten older, we have now realized that products from other fast food restaurants are really not that great.
When making your own burger, the quality of the ingredients is the most important thing. The meat should be fresh and of good quality, ideally from a trusted butcher. The bun also plays a big role. It should be fresh and crispy, but not too hard. Fresh vegetables such as lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers provide the crunchy bite. Sauces and spices round off the taste and should be chosen according to individual taste. Don't forget the cheese, which should ideally melt well. Finally, the right preparation is also crucial. The meat should be cooked to perfection and the ingredients should be harmoniously layered so that you can taste all the components at the same time when eating.
Which meat?
The best quality beef is best. It shouldn't be too lean, as the fat provides the flavor. A ratio of 80% meat to 20% fat is considered ideal. Alternatively, mixed minced meat or even poultry can be used. It is important that the meat is fresh and of good quality.
Which salad?
Some of the best lettuces to use with a burger are iceberg lettuce, romaine lettuce, or our favorite, Batavia lettuce. They have a crisp texture and fresh flavor that pairs well with the rich flavor of the meat and cheese. Additionally, you can also use arugula if you prefer a slightly peppery flavor.
Which cheese?
There are many different types of cheese that go well with burgers. Here are some suggestions:
Cheddar: This cheese is very popular for burgers because of its strong flavor and good melting properties.
Gouda: Gouda has a milder flavor and melts very well, making it a good choice for burgers.
Mozzarella: For an Italian twist, mozzarella could be a good choice.
Our personal favorite, however, is the sliced cheese. Wrapped in foil and already very smooth in consistency, this cheese melts very quickly and impresses with its good taste.
Ultimately, it really depends on what taste and texture you prefer.
