Jackfruit Burger

The jackfruit burger is a popular vegetarian and vegan alternative to the traditional meat burger. The main ingredient is jackfruit, a tropical fruit known for its meat-like texture when cooked. It has a mild flavor that absorbs spices and flavors well, making it a versatile ingredient for a variety of dishes.

For the jackfruit burger, the fruit is usually cooked in some sort of barbecue or seasoning sauce and then shredded to create the appearance of pulled meat. It is then served on a bun, often along with various toppings such as lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and sauces.

One benefit of the jackfruit burger is that it is a good source of fiber and vitamin C. Additionally, it is often lower in calories and fat compared to a meat burger.

Preparation in 6 steps

For the coleslaw: Remove the stalk from the pointed cabbage and cut into fine strips. Peel the carrot, cut off the ends and grate coarsely with a grater. Add salt, sugar, cumin powder, olive oil and vinegar and knead everything vigorously by hand. Season with pepper. Leave to stand for at least 15-30 minutes.

For the burger: Peel the onion and cut into thin rings. Cut the jalapeño into thin rings. Drain the jackfruit. Preheat oil in a pan on the stove at medium heat.

Add the jackfruit and fry on all sides for about 5 minutes. Season with the rub of your choice and fry for another 2 minutes. Add the vegan BBQ sauce, mix and remove from the stove. Pull the jackfruit apart with a fork and set aside.

Preheat the gas grill to medium direct heat and place the reversible plate with the flat side facing up in the direct zone of the grill.

Cut the buns open and spread margarine on both sides. Roast on the reversible plate with the cut side facing down for about 30 seconds.

Cover the bottom halves of the bun with coleslaw, jackfruit, jalapeños and onions. Place the top halves of the bun on the burger.
